About SCBWI
SCBWI
International
The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, formed
in 1971 by a group of Los Angeles-based writers for children, is the
only international organization to offer a variety of services to
people who write, illustrate, or share a vital interest in
children’s literature. The SCBWI acts as a network for the
exchange of knowledge between writers, illustrators, editors,
publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers and others
involved with literature for young people. There are currently more
than 12,000 members worldwide, in over 70 regions, making it the
largest children's writing organization in the world.

Northern
Ohio
Chapter
In 1990 Laurie
Lazzaro Knowlton began the Ohio Chapter of SCBWI. She served as
the regional advisor for many years. During that time we assisted
Southern Ohio to begin a chapter. Since then the Ohio Chapters have
grown by leaps and bounds and has been led by many fine, dedicated
volunteers who have given their time and energy.
Regional
Advisor
Victoria
Selvaggio joined
the Northern Ohio SCBWI in 2005 after self-publishing Because I'm Afraid and The
Hope Chest. Her
reason for self-publishing at the time was that both books were
intended gifts for her children. Realistically, it started a
journey that included book signings, school visits, and presentations
and most importantly, the Northern Ohio SCBWI.
In 2008, Victoria stepped into
the
volunteer Executive Board role of Assistant Volunteer Coordinator and
the Ohio List-serve Moderator. In 2009, she advanced to the
Executive Board role of Assistant Regional Advisor and the Ohio
List-serve Moderator. In 2010, she became the Regional
Advisor.
Chapter
Goals
Goals include more genre-specific events geared toward honing the craft
of writing and illustrating for all levels of writers and
illustrators. Utilizing today’s technology by upgrading the
website has been another goal. Re-designing critique meets to
cater to a specific genre is also in the works. These are a
few
changes, of many to come!
All those involved with SCBWI
work in a
volunteer capacity. Contact
the
local chapter board with questions, to volunteer or make
suggestions.
