Welcome to the NOHSCBWI Online Information Hub!

Greetings from our new Regional Advisor,
Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton!

I would like to introduce myself to you. I am Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton your new Regional Advisor and the author of 35 books and the illustrator of two. I have been published in the trade, educational, craft, and Christian market.
Back in 1988 I originated the SCBWI Houston Chapter, and then in 1990 began the Ohio Chapter of SCBWI where I was the regional advisor for many years. During that time we assisted Southern Ohio to begin a chapter. Since then the Ohio Chapter has grown by leaps and bounds and has been led by many fine, dedicated women who have given their time and energy. These RAs and board members have helped Ohio SCBWI members achieve their goals of perfecting their writing and illustrating, and seeing themselves, finally, in print.

It is my goal to continue to offer the quality programs that you are used to, but also to initiate a few new ideas. I would like to see us not only critique manuscripts and art but to also have submission parties. Submission parties work as a great goal for individuals working on rewrites as a result of the critiques.
I would also like to tweak our already wonderful conference by adding workshops where the participants don't just come and listen but also have the opportunity to WORK on their present writing and illustrating. I will be asking for suggestions of qualified instructors to assist in this new endeavor.
We are always interested in volunteers. We have a wonderful circle of people who make this group work like a well oiled machine, but there's always room for more. Volunteering is a great way to be part of something positive, not only in your own, life but in the lives of the people you meet. I personally believe SCBWI members are some of the nicest, most generous, helpful people I have know in my lifetime.
So come join us on the third Saturday of every month at the Barnes and Noble in Fairlawn, on the north side of Rt. 18. We begin at 10:00 and end around 12:00. See our schedule for the events. Also please mark your calendars now for September when we hold our yearly conference. It promises to be chock-full of information, inspiration, and hard work as you improve and expand your manuscripts and art.
I look forward to working with you all and am always open to suggestions. Please feel free to email me and identify yourself as an OH SCBWI member.
Happy Writing and Illustrating!

Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton

Letter from National SCBWI

Hello SCBWI Member,

Phase 1 of the bright NEW www.scbwi.org is now launched, and we hope you'll login and
browse.  The new site will give us many more features, and we'll alert you when more new functionality is activated.
For now, you'll need some login hints.  All
existing passwords were imported from the old system to the new in all
CAPITAL LETTERS.
The new system is case-sensitve, and you'llbe able to update your password to any upper-lower combination you like.
Just type it all in upper case the first time.
If you have clicked Forgot-Your-Password
and have received a newly generated
temporary password, and it seems not to
work, try this:  if you highlight and paste it,
there is a trailing blank space which needs
to be backspaced out.

(If you are one of those people who has a
spam blocking system requiring senders
to be real people, you won't receive a system message with a new password.  Please call us in the office and we'll arrange toget it to you.)

Be sure to login as a member before
beginning to register for the
August Los Angeles conference
so that the system will properly
charge you as a member.
We appreciate your willingness to learn
the new system.  We're learning, too!
If you have other questions,
email me or Aaron
.

For Lin and Steve and all of us at the SCBWI office,

Book Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Children's Book is just that-complete. From beginning to end Harold Underdown's, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Children's Book reads like a personal  conversation. Underdown begins each chapter with an overview of what he is going to cover, then doles out the meatier parts in small bites.  Like most people  writers love sweets, and Harold offers those  up in interesting boxes, named "Playground Stories," "Can You Keep a Secret?" and "Class Rules." Each chapter then ends with, "The Least You Need To Know."   Underdown's book is meticulous.  He covers everything from where to begin, setting up a work space, building on ideas, understanding genres, revising, getting familiar with agents and publishers, working with an editor, and what to do once you get a manuscript accepted. Underdown even walks the reader through building a career by developing a promotion plan.   Then, he goes the extra 150% by offering up a glossary of terms and a sample of every kind of letter a writer or illustrator may need, along with a sample manuscript format. The Complete Idiot's
Guide to Publishing for Children's Books
is a smart choice for anyone interested in publication in the field of children's literature
